In this DIY, I’ll explain how to make a wasp fishing lure (4 cm/3 gr).
- Reflexion and drawings are the more important steps: knowing where you wish to go!
- Trimming of the sketch and wood tracing. Here, I used balsa wood, easy to work and easy to find in modelling shops
- Raw shaping with a cutting bandsaw
- Sanding of the form
- Here I drawed marks on each side as guides for straight sanding
- Cut the form across its length with a saw blade. Be careful! The balsa wood is very fragile!
- Framework design with piano wire and pliers (special DIY soon…)
- Framework ligation and bonding with super glue
- Insert the framework in the form
- Balancing of the insect using soft leads: one of the more important step! The wasp must perfectly float taking into account varnish and painting
- Overall bonding with two-components epoxy glue
-Patching the hole using wood filler
- Perfect sanding of all the insect. It shall be totally smooth
- First paint coat using ‘white Montana’ (better if grey)
- Delicate step: punch the wasp with little drill
- Yellow painting with aerograph and Createx paint
- Draw wasp’s black grooves with a marker
- Do wings and legs using 45/100 fluorocarbon line
- Do a ‘cornet’ and fill it with epoxy glue. Use it for pasting wings and legs
